Pottery Studio Framing
Hey folks,
This videos shares an update regarding studio construction.
When considering the scope of the tear down and rebuild, the first 4 days of demolition started in mid-May. Another week was put into the creation of the foundation. And we're about 6 build days into the framing of the building. So if you're wondering how long it takes to build a simple garage, my estimate is 6 weeks.
We've still got to take care of electrical, roofing, exterior siding & paint, and interior drywall & finishing. I tell you--it's really nice to have an organized, communicative, and professional contractor!
As mentioned in the video, I've got a handful of other projects so I won't be documenting the last fe...

    I wonder if that technique could be used to save a slumping pot - wrap burlap around it as a sort of bandage until it hardens up.

      @TonyLockhart Месяц назад

      Yep, probably the same 10-14% that I've seen from all of the other cone 5 clay varieties. I did get some odd warping even though all of the zones in my kiln fire evenly....probably some kind of an error on my part when drying them out. Do you have experience with BMix? If so, have you noticed a reasonable amount of shrink?

    How thick did you apply the castile blue to prevent it from running?

    • @TonyLockhart
      @TonyLockhart Месяц назад

      That's tough to answer because you have to do a lot of trail and error to figure it out. I will say that I lightly spray 2 layers and all goes well. I also find that Castille Blue runs a lot more on darker clays, so that's something to take into consideration. When spraying, the specific gravity of my glaze is between 55 and 60 baumes....looks kinda thick like cream. Hope that helps!

    Absolutely beautiful!! Looove the sound of the rain!! I used BMix for several years and then they started having the problems with it not vitrifying and I haven’t touched it since then. I have friends that had entire kiln loads not vitrify and there is just no way I want to deal with that. Good luck. Also may I ask what tape you use? I bought some tape and it doesn’t bend around to make a curve at all.

      Sometimes....you've got to try and rotate the tongs for that to happen. You could also slowly submerge it from the side. The big idea is to avoid trapping and air pocket as the vessel gets dipped in the glaze. Hope that helps!

I'd end by merging those layers and duplicating. You can send me an email and I'll be happy to make one for you. Cheers!

      No complaints thus far. It throws like a dream, reclaims easily, and takes to colorant well. I don't fire about cone5, and I tend to fire at a slow/medium speed. I've heard a number of other potters complain about blistering, but I haven't had an issue yet. I've got about 300 pounds of it so I'll blow through it this summer. Fingers crossed!

      @@TonyLockhart That’s great to hear. Hoping they get it figured out. I bought 250 pounds of B clay from continental clay and I’ve used it for several years now but the new stuff I got was not at all plastic and cracked when you bent it. It’s called being short and that was the 3rd time it happened. I sent it back and had to try something new from a different company. I had made over 150 test tiles with that clay and now have to start over. I’m a bit peaved to say the least. Hope it all works well for you

      Great question! It's actually sheltered very nicely because I built a structure with 4x4 posts of pressure treated wood. The footprint is a lot wider than the kiln and the roof is sloped. It's worked really well during the last 2 years, although exterior parts of the kiln have rusted significantly.
